Position Summary: The Pre Admit RN, is responsible for assessing and preparing patients for surgery before their scheduled procedures. This role includes conducting pre-operative phone assessments, reviewing medical histories, coordinating necessary pre-surgical testing, and providing patient education. The Pre-Admission Nurse ensures that all required documentation is complete, identifies potential surgical risks, and collaborates with the surgical team to optimize patient readiness.

Position Requirements

Education: Graduate of an accredited school/college of nursing required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Licensure: Registered Nursing licensed in the State of Nebraska or eligible compact state required.

Certification: N/A

Experience: 3+ years medical-surgical experience with demonstrated competence in patient assessment and teaching preferred.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong understanding of pre-operative nursing assessments and risk factors
  • Knowledge of anesthesia considerations and post-operative care plans
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) and documentation practices
  • Ability to assess lab results, EKGs, and other pre-surgical screening tests
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to identify age, cultural, language and learning specific needs of the patient.
  • Team player who can work collaboratively with physicians, anesthesia providers, and surgical staff
  • Ability to problem solve independently and resolve conflict
  • Maintains confidentiality and complies with HIPPA regulations and hospital protocols

Essential Job Functions

  • Pre-Admission Assessment and Coordination: – Conduct comprehensive pre-operative assessments, including reviewing medical history, medications, allergies, and previous surgical experiences. – Coordinate necessary pre-operative testing, such as labs, imaging, EKGs, and other diagnostics, ensuring results are reviewed and communicated to the surgical team. – Identify potential risks, such as anesthesia concerns or comorbidities, and collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other providers to develop appropriate care plans.
  • Patient Education and Preparation: – Educate patients and their families on pre-operative instructions, surgical procedures, anesthesia, and post-operative care expectations. – Provide guidance on medication management, fasting requirements, and other pre-surgical preparations to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes. – Address patient and family concerns, answer questions, and provide support throughout the pre-admission process.
  • Collaboration with Clinical and Administrative Teams: – Work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, pre-certification specialists, and schedulers to ensure all pre-operative requirements are met. – Communicate any changes in patient status, test results, or risk factors to the surgical team promptly. – Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and case reviews to enhance patient care coordination.
  • Quality Improvement and Compliance: – Ensure compliance with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements, including infection control, patient safety, and documentation protocols.
  • Documentation and Reporting: – Maintain accurate and detailed patient records in the electronic health record (EHR), including assessment findings, test results, patient education, and care plans. – Generate reports on pre-admission metrics, such as patient readiness, testing compliance, and cancellation rates, to inform leadership of performance and opportunities for improvement. – Ensure all documentation is completed timely, accurately, and in compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
  • Patient Advocacy and Safety: – Act as a patient advocate, ensuring that patient needs and concerns are addressed and that care is patient-centered and compassionate. – Implement safety protocols to minimize risks and enhance patient outcomes throughout the pre-admission process. – Respond to urgent issues, such as abnormal test results or changes in patient status, coordinating appropriate interventions and follow-up care.

Physical requirements: This position is classified as Sedentary Work in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally) up to (33% of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (33%-66% of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
