What to Include on Your CDI Nursing Resume

When you’re applying to CDI roles, your resume has to do more than list what unit you worked on and how many patients you managed. Hiring managers are skimming for signs that you understand documentation, quality, and the kind of critical thinking this job requires.

Here’s how to make that clear:

  • Update your job titles to something searchable and recognizable, like Critical Care Float Nurse, Telemetry RN, or Cardiac Stepdown RN. Internal titles like Clinical Nurse or Staff Nurse don’t mean much outside your hospital, so use that space wisely on your resume.
  • In your resume bullet points, include any assignments where you were involved in improving or reviewing documentation or quality improvement projects. That could be chart audits, infection control efforts, skin assessments, or restraint documentation, as well as tracking missed documentation for core measures like VTE prophylaxis or sepsis bundle compliance, or reviewing metrics tied to room turnover times, readmission rates, or discharge planning.
  • If you have ever worked closely with case management or helped prep a patient for discharge by double-checking documentation or orders, that’s worth including on your resume.
  • It’s always best if you have metrics (outcomes/numbers) to back up your resume statements, like reducing errors, improving compliance, or completing chart reviews; that’s even better. These don’t have to be big wins or even ones only specific to you.  It’s okay to use metrics from unit-based projects on your resume (hint: sometimes these are found just hanging around in the breakroom bulletin board!). Small, specific outcomes help paint a clearer picture.

Who Hires CDI Nurses?

Most first-time CDI nurses are hired directly by hospitals or health systems. Fully remote roles are often only available to experienced CDI nurses, although there are a few third-party companies that hire entry-level CDI nurses and provide training. Most hospitals hire and train new CDI nurses into onsite or hybrid roles during training and then transition to remote.

You may also find CDI positions with:

  • Insurance companies
  • Revenue cycle management companies
  • Consulting or staffing agencies

When reviewing job listings, check to see if experience or certifications are “preferred” versus “required.” If you meet the clinical background but not the credentials, you may still be a strong candidate.

  • 53% of RN respondents reported earning over $110,000 per year
  • Most CCDS-certified nurses also fell into that higher salary range, with 63.5% earning over $110,000
  • Even without advanced credentials, nurses with inpatient experience often fall into the $80,000 to $109,999 salary bracket.

Frequently Asked Questions About Becoming a CDI Nurse

Do I need a BSN to work in CDI?
