Are you ready to turn your nursing expertise into extra cash? There are so many options for side jobs for nurses, and there are plenty of flexible in-person and remote opportunities. I’m going to share some companies to help you find these side jobs from home! Whether you’re looking to supplement your income, use your skills in new ways, travel while you work, or just have some fun, these side gigs are perfect for nurses to check out.
Freelance Nurse & Health Writing
Do you have a passion for writing and a wealth of nursing knowledge to share? Then freelance nurse writing might be for you! With this side hustle, you can work from anywhere (hello digital nomad lifestyle!), make your own schedule, and share your expertise with the world. Whether you’re writing articles, website copy (yes, nurse copywriting is a real job!), blog posts, social media content, educational video scripts, or any other type of content, the possibilities are endless!
If you’re new to the freelance nurse writer world, Savvy Nurse Writer offers an excellent membership to help you get started on your freelance business of sharing your nursing expertise through writing. This side job can take some time to get the ball rolling, but there are many nurses who have turned this side hustle into their full-time gig!

PRN Remote Nurse Triage
Do you still want to have patient interaction but don’t want to leave your home? Then remote nurse triage might be the perfect side gig for you! I landed my first PRN remote nursing job in this specialty, making follow-up phones to patients post-discharge.
This is one of the top remote nursing roles that offer flexible PRN/Per Diem and Part-time roles and usually have the highest success rates for nurses transitioning straight from the bedside. In this role, you provide remote assessments and treatment recommendations to patients in need. You’ll get to use your nursing skills to help others, all while enjoying the flexibility of working from home.
Clinical Data Abstraction
Are you detail-oriented with amazing investigative and technical skills? Data abstraction is one of my favorite remote nursing specialties for introverts! A data abstractor nurse reviews patient records to extract clinical information that can help identify trends, gaps in healthcare, and potential quality issues. This tech-heavy specialty requires strong attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills.
With these flexible side jobs, you can work remotely, onsite, or hybrid, depending on the needs of the company or hospital. These roles can be challenging to land, so persistence in applying really pays off! Data abstraction nurses often enjoy flexible schedules and may also take on seasonal contract work as Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) abstractors from January to May each year.
Hospital quality departments often hire nurses to work in data abstracting and submit data to national Registries, such as NSQIP, Breast Cancer Surveillance, or Perinatal Quality Collaboratives. This list by NIH includes many additional potential quality improvement registries hospitals may participate in.
Legal Nurse Consulting (LNC)
Do you have a passion for healthcare and a knack for the legal system? Love doing investigative and medical chronology? Then, legal nurse consulting or expert witness roles may be just what you’re looking for!
This side job involves supporting attorneys and insurance companies on medical-related cases, reviewing medical records, identifying potential medical errors, creating medical chronological reports, and sometimes providing expert testimony.
Where to find these gigs? My go-to for finding these roles is setting up custom job alerts on Linkedin and Indeed. The Remote Nurse, Connection Job Board, also has a filter for legal nursing jobs! For more information about how to get started in this role, check out this blog post, where Erin shares her journey from bedside nursing to LNC.
Tutoring Nursing Students or Remote Adjunct Nursing Professor
Do you have a passion for teaching and a wealth of nursing knowledge to share? Then, tutoring nursing students or becoming a remote adjunct nursing professor, NCLEX item writer, or nursing tutor may be the perfect side gig for you! In this role, you can help nursing students pass school exams or study for the NCLEX while still enjoying the flexibility of working from anywhere (for most 1099 contract roles). Some companies that frequently hire for these roles are Varsity Tutors, Kaplan, and Achieve Test Prep.
If you need to gain experience writing NCLEX questions, check out the free volunteer resource to gain remote nursing experience that I included in the Free Remote Nursing Getting Started Guide.
Paid Medical Surveys
Here’s a list of medical survey companies that I’ve personally used:
PRN Concierge Nurse or Educator
Biotech companies are growing, and with that comes the need for nurses! I’ve found several companies that hire nurses on a PRN basis to either travel the country for educational in-services, travel to patient homes to educate on medical devices, IV field nursing, or work as a triage after-hours nurse, supporting clients that call in questions. Some companies that offer this type of PRN side gig are BioMatrix Specialty Pharmacy, IQVIA, and PeriGen. There are a few more biotech companies listed in this blog post to check out also.
Nurse Concierge jobs are similar to home health in that you will be providing care inside a patient’s home (or hotel). Some examples of this side gig are IV Infusions, IVF medication education & administration, or post-op recovery for cosmetic surgery patients. These side jobs usually offer very flexible scheduling!
Wrapping it up, there’s never been a better time to turn your nursing expertise into a fun and lucrative side hustle, especially with so many options you can work at home! From freelance writing to legal nurse consulting and tutoring to paid medical surveys, there’s an option for everyone.
Finding these jobs and companies can be time-consuming, which is one of the reasons I created the Remote Company Directory, which is available inside the Premium Membership. I started a list of companies during my remote nursing job search in 2018, and it has massively expanded to a directory of over 700+ remote nurse and biotech companies! This easy-to-search and filter directory makes finding these companies so much quicker! Nurses can review benefits, along with closed job listings that include titles, descriptions, and salary information (no more wondering what job titles these companies use for remote nursing jobs!). This directory is growing daily so members can quickly zoom in on which remote nurse companies offer the types of benefits and career paths they are searching for.
