As a former travel nurse, I’ve gained invaluable insights into packing techniques, best gear that travels well, and how to travel light. Although I didn’t work remotely as a nurse during that time, I traveled extensively across the US and internationally.
However, in 2019, I transitioned to a full-time remote nurse position and set up a home office for myself. Despite that, my nomadic spirit continued to urge me to travel. So, I decided to create a digital nomad nurse setup that would allow me to work efficiently while exploring the US.
Here’s a list of the essential tech accessories I use to maintain my productivity while working remotely as a digital nomad nurse. Of course, every digital nomad needs an ultra-portable laptop. The top two choices for lightweight laptops are Dell XPS & Macbook Air M2. Some companies provide all the tech equipment, but if you are working freelance jobs, you’ll need to your own setup!
* Make sure you check with your HR department before traveling and working remotely as an employee.
1. Bluetooth Mouse & Keyboard
If you’re working remotely, you’ll be spending long hours on your computer. To ensure comfort and convenience, consider getting a Bluetooth ergonomic mouse and keyboard. Some great options that I use are the Logitech Lift Vertical Ergonomic Mouse, Logitech K380 Wireless Multi-Device Keyboard, and iClever BK05 Bluetooth Keyboard with 3-Color Backlight.
2. Ergonomic Laptop Stand
When you’re constantly on the go like me, then you know how important it is to have the right gear for your remote nursing job. And let me tell you, a laptop stand is an absolute must-have! Not only does it keep your laptop at a comfortable and ergonomic height, but it also prevents you from hunching over and straining your neck and back.
Trust me, investing in a laptop stand will make all the difference in the world, and you’ll be able to work for longer periods of time without any discomfort. Plus, it’s a small, lightweight accessory that won’t take up too much space in your backpack. There are plenty of great options out there, but I personally love the Roost V3 Laptop Stand and MOFT Invisible Laptop Stand. I like these because they are ergonomic, lightweight, and fold up flat for easy packing.
3. Battery Backup
In addition to a laptop stand, another essential item for any remote nurse on the move is a reliable battery backup. Being able to keep your laptop charged at all times is crucial to ensure you can work efficiently and without interruption.
Amazon offers a variety of portable chargers and battery backups to choose from, including the popular Anker Power Bank and SinKeu Portable Charger. These products come in a range of sizes and battery capacities, allowing you to choose the perfect option for your needs. With a reliable battery backup in your bag, you can work confidently and without interruption, no matter where your travels take you.
4. Mobile Internet
When you’re working remotely, you need to make sure that you have access to the internet. Staying connected to the internet is crucial for any remote worker. One useful product for maintaining a strong internet connection is a Wi-Fi extender. The NetGear Wi-Fi Extender is a reliable and easy-to-use device that can boost your Wi-Fi signal and extend your network’s coverage area.
Another product that you can consider for international travel is the Solis Lite Mobile Wi-Fi, a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that can be used in 135 countries. It offers high-speed internet access and can connect up to 10 devices simultaneously. For those who need an even stronger and more reliable internet connection, the NetGear Nighthawk Mobile Wi-Fi is an excellent option. This mobile hotspot provides a faster and more secure internet connection, making it ideal for streaming, video conferencing, and other bandwidth-intensive tasks.
A few pricier options for areas where cell service is scarce are the weBoost and MOFI router. Another newer option on the market now is StarLink. If you’re interested in that option and looking for more information, join the FaceBook Group, StarLink for Rvers and other mobile users.
Whatever product you choose, having a backup plan, like carrying a local SIM card, is a smart idea in case you find yourself in an area without Wi-Fi.
5. Headphones
When it comes to selecting the right pair of headphones for remote nursing work, there are plenty of options to choose from. However, two of my favorite choices are the Bose QuietComfort Noise Cancelling Headphones and the Blue Parrott Noise Cancelling Headset with microphone. The Bose QuietComfort headphones offer excellent noise-canceling technology, which helps eliminate distracting background sounds, making them a great choice for anyone working in a noisy environment. The Blue Parrott headset is perfect for those who spend a lot of time on the phone, as the microphone ensures clear audio quality during phone calls. Both of these headphones are top-rated on Amazon, so you can be sure that you’re making a solid investment.
6. Bag to carry Laptop & Supplies
Another option is the BUBM Big Travel Office Cable Organizer, which is great for keeping your cables organized and preventing tangling or damage. With this cable organizer, you can easily store your laptop charger, USB cables, and other accessories in one secure place. These are two great options that you can find on Amazon to keep your remote work essentials organized and easily transportable.
7. Fun & Useful Gadgets for traveling and working remotely
Here are a few gadgets that can make your remote work environment a more enjoyable and pleasant space: Webcam Camera Cover Slide, Travel Power Strip for all your electronic needs, Reusable Cord Organizer to manage the mess of cables, World Traveler Adaptor Kit for traveling abroad, and Therm-a-Rest Lite Seat Ultralight Inflatable Seat Cushion to keep you comfortable during long working hours. These gadgets can make your remote work experience more exciting and fun while at the same time boosting your productivity and motivation.
If you’re a digital nomad nurse or a remote nurse with a travel itch, having the right tech supplies is crucial to maintaining productivity and comfort while on the go. Whether you’re exploring the US or traveling abroad/internationally, investing in these essential items will help you work efficiently and effectively. So, pack your bags, and hit the road with the confidence that you have everything you need to succeed. Safe travels!
