Very early on in my career, I was exposed to nurses working in different non-traditional areas of healthcare. This gave me a head start on understanding which biotech companies hire nurses and many other types of companies that hire nurses for non-bedside roles. I started working in nursing informatics in my second year of nursing during the EHR surge of the early 2000s.
I lucked out by taking a travel nursing contract at a hospital that was an EHR beta testing site. When I returned to my staff nursing job after that contract, I was encouraged to work on the EHR design teams and quickly discovered my love for technology in nursing.
As I continued to grow in this new nursing specialty, I began interacting with more nurses working in alternative nursing roles in medical devices, pharmaceutical companies, research, information technology, project management, and EHR vendors. However, this isn’t the case for many nurses so early in their careers and finding biotech nursing jobs can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. This is where this blog post comes in…I’m shedding some light on what biotech nursing is and naming some biotech companies that hire nurses.
Nurses are natural caretakers and liaisons; even in non-patient-facing roles, patient safety and advocacy are at the core of what we do. As biotech companies continue to grow, it’s essential that nurses be involved in any aspect of healthcare that affects patient care to ensure a smooth transition and to help bridge the gap for any workflow and patient safety issues.

What is Biotech Nursing?
The lines between biotech, biopharma, medical device, and health tech companies can also get fuzzy when thinking about these non-traditional nursing roles because they are closely related, and some companies might overlap multiple areas. I think using the term life sciences helps to drastically broaden the scope of companies for nurses to search for these alternative career paths, but even then, it can be challenging!
Let’s talk about some quick differences between biotech, biopharma, and healthtech/medtech.
Biotechnology involves the process of using living organisms to develop products (to be used in healthcare or other areas like agriculture), and biopharma companies use the new discoveries and biotechnology processes to develop medications (like Keytruda or Humira); they kinda bridge the gap between lab and patient.
Since health tech, med tech, and biotech technologies can all be used in healthcare, there is more overlap in some of these areas. Medtech and Healthtech companies develop medical devices and software that can be used in and out of the hospital setting to monitor, diagnose, or treat patients. Many of the same types of biotech nursing roles can also be found in these types of companies.
Biotech nurses could wear many different hats in different work environments, so it can be difficult to search for these biotech nursing jobs because they may not be specific to only nurses.
Some of the types of non-traditional nursing roles available at these companies include (could be remote, hybrid, onsite, or home-based with travel required):
- Educator
- Triage/Call Center
- Clinical Consultant or Liaison
- Occupational Health Nurse
- Sales or sales support
- Informatics and Project Management
- Data Science & Data Analytics
- Navigator/Coordinator
- Clinical Research
- Quality Assurance
- Regulatory Policy
- Writer
