Remote nursing internships are one of those phrases that might make you go hmmmm. Like, do those really exist? Yep, they sure do! As more and more healthcare jobs shift into remote or hybrid setups, some employers are bringing in nursing students to train them while they’re still in school.

Don’t get me wrong, these internships aren’t all fully remote. A few are, but most are some mix of remote, hybrid, or onsite, depending on the team and the type of work. Still, getting the chance to intern in a nontraditional nursing role while you’re a student can do wonders for your new grad resume, plus boost your chances of landing a remote nursing job when you’re ready! Even the nursing interships that aren’t fully remote will help you stand out later if you’re aiming for utilization review, case management, quality, or any of the other remote-friendly specialties nurses move into.

So, before we get into the companies, it helps to clarify what these internships are and how they can set you up for the types of alternative roles nurses work in remotely later on.

What to Expect from Remote-Friendly Nursing Internships

Nursing student internships for alternative or nontraditional roles can vary a lot from company to company. After reviewing lots of job titles and descriptions, it’s clear that these opportunities tend to blend different types of experiences depending on the company and department’s mission.

A remote nurse case manager internship, for example, usually involves shadowing case managers and supporting their daily work so nursing students can learn about the role, just like you would in hospital clinicals while learning bedside nursing care.

These internships operate much like nursing school clinicals, but in nontraditional nursing settings and often during the summer. Unlike school-based clinicals, they’re independent of your nursing program, typically paid, and designed to immerse you in real team responsibilities.

Some companies offer these internships as fully remote job opportunities, while others are hybrid or on-site. A common misconception is that “remote nursing” is its own specialty. It is not! Many nursing specialties can be done remotely or in a hybrid model. These internships give nursing students early exposure to specialties that are rarely covered in school, where nurses have the potential to work somewhere away from the bedside. This behind-the-scenes experience helps students build practical skills, understand day-to-day workflows of nontraditional nursing jobs, and become stronger candidates for future remote nurse jobs after graduation.

If you want to explore where these internship paths often lead, the career guides below walk through several common remote-friendly nursing specialties:

Tips to Land a Remote Nursing Internship

Landing a remote nursing internship (or any nursing internship, really) usually comes down to timing and preparation. Because these positions fill quickly, standing out among the competition is key!

A few smart strategies, from tailoring your resume to highlighting tech skills, can make all the difference in getting noticed and landing the internship.

  • In your resume and cover letter, include the class projects you have completed and any hands-on experience from clinicals or volunteer work. Quality improvement projects always look great because so many remote-friendly nursing roles connect back to process and outcomes.
  • Don’t forget to emphasize strong communication skills and your comfort with tech. Most remote nursing internships rely on email, messaging tools, and heavy use of multiple software programs at one time, so show off your techy skills!
  • Update your LinkedIn to reflect the types of roles you are targeting (e.g., use job keywords in your header and skills section). Yes, hiring teams absolutely check LinkedIn (& other social media platforms), so make sure yours lines up with the internship you’re targeting! Bonus points for getting LinkedIn recommendations on your profile.
  • Start networking now! Don’t wait until the end of the semester when the internships start posting. Even liking or commenting on company posts can help recruiters recognize your name later on.
  • Apply as soon as the position gets posted! Many nursing student internships close within 24 to 48 hours (especially remote & hybrid ones) because the applicant volume is high. (Same thing goes for all remote nursing jobs)!

FAQs About Remote Nursing Internships

Do remote nursing internships really exist?

Yes! While not every internship is fully remote, many healthcare companies now offer hybrid or remote-friendly nursing internships. These programs give students exposure to nontraditional nursing roles outside of bedside care.

Don’t overlook the on-site internship opportunities for nontraditional nursing jobs! These will help strengthen your applications for bedside nursing jobs after graduation, as well as remote nursing jobs in the future.

Are remote nursing internships paid?

Most of what I’ve seen posted are paid opportunities, though the rates vary by company and role. Pay ranges can be hourly (often between $16 – $28+/hr) or stipend-based, depending on the internship program, company, and state/location.

What kinds of roles can nursing students intern in remotely?

Common remote-friendly specialties include case management, utilization review, quality improvement, clinical data abstraction, and informatics. These internships help students build skills that translate into remote nursing jobs after graduation. There are also opportunities for nursing internships at biotech, health tech, and medical device companies!

When do remote nursing internships usually take place?

The majority are offered during the summer months, though some companies also post fall or spring opportunities. Application windows are short, so it’s important to apply quickly when listings get posted!

How do I find remote nursing internships?

Start by making a list of target companies that hire for nontraditional nursing jobs. Then, start checking their company career pages, setting up job alerts for internships, and following recruiters on LinkedIn (same process for remote nursing jobs, too!).

You can also use job boards that list nursing internships (like ours!), but be ready to apply fast, since positions often close within 24 – 48 hours. You can filter for any non-licensed nursing jobs using our Specialty filter, Potential for New Grad Nurse, on the job board. If the position is posted as an internship oppoturnity, you can filter for ‘Internship’ under the Employment Type filter.
